Four of Five Witcher Brothers that
Survived the Civil War

Reuben E. Witcher. He was only 16
when the other brothers left home for the war, but in 1864, when he was 18, he
was taken into Bourland's Regiment to serve along with his brother Clay. After
the war he returned home for a few years and lived with his widowed mother, then
married and moved away to Childress, TX. You'll note in the picture that he is
wearing a ribbon from the Childress unit of the Confederate veterans. Reuben
raised children and lived out his life in Childress.
REUBEN E. WITCHER was born 16 Sep 1846 in Pittsylvania
County, Virginia, and died 14 Feb 1931 in Childress, Childress County, Texas.
He married TEXANNA ALLRED 01 Jun 1873. She was born 11 Nov 1857 in 1858,
and died 15 Aug 1946.

William Clay Witcher. He was
just older than Reuben but two years younger than Armistead. He joined the
confederate army in 1862, going into the Frontier Service with Bourland's
Regiment. After the war he returned home and raised a family in Grayson County.
WILLIAM CLAY WITCHER was born 10 Jun 1844 in Pittsylvania
County, Virginia, and died 07 Feb 1931. He married BARTHENA ALLRED 23 Mar
1865. She was born 1846, and died 02 Jul 1929 in Bells, Texas.

Armistead Melville Witcher.
He and his oldest brother, John Henry, went off to the civil war together in
Walker's Texas Division. They were released at Hempstead at the end of the war
in 1865. Armistead died in 1928 at the age of 86.
ARMISTEAD MELVILLE WITCHER was born 25 Dec 1842 in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia, and died 19 Nov 1928 in Liberty Hill, Williamson, Texas. He
married AMERICA ANN HOLLAND 12 Aug 1869 in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas,
daughter of EDWARD HOLLAND and ELIZABETH BAKER. She was born 24 Apr 1852
in Caldwell, Kentucky, and died 20 Sep 1916 in Liberty Hill, Williamson, Texas.

James Coleman Witcher. He was
the first of the boys to enlist. He joined the Honey Grove Texas Militia in
1861, they were mustered into Young's 11th Texas Cav. by the end of the year
and left the area. They later joined the Army of Tennessee and James C. saw
action in many battles, one of the most notable was Murfreesboro. After the war
he married and lived in Grayson Co. He had a farm and was in the drug store
business. He had five children and two wives, was a Mason, and died in 1926. He
is buried in the West cemetery at Bells, along with both his wives.
JAMES COLEMAN WITCHER was born 11 Dec 1839 in Pittsylvania
County, Virginia, and died 16 May 1926 in Bells, Texas. He married (1)
MILDRED FANNY GILBERT 20 Sep 1869. She was born 17 Feb 1844 in Franklin
County, Virginia, and died 1880 in Grayson, County. He married (2) MITTIE
ELLEN RAMSEY 20 Jan 1881 in Bells, Texas. She was born 04 Dec 1858 in
Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died 1936 in Bells, Texas.
