"Big Hat & Little Whispers"
Texas Food & Drink"
Bellville, Texas
|
Lunch at the Big Hat Do you remember when you spent a day or two at grandma's house? The food wasn't really like at home but was a simpler fare. That is the feeling I had recently when I ate at "Big Hat & Little Whisperer" sandwich shop just off the square in Bellville, Texas. This eating establishment is a counter served / self serve sandwich and snack shop. I decided to order the Brisket Sandwich. A woman who looked like a grandmother asked, "Would you like your brisket sliced or chopped?" I said "Chopped please." While my sandwich was being prepared I looked at the variety of snacks, chips and drinks available. I pick out what I wanted with my lunch. After I had made my selections I realized that "Grandma" was still "fixin" my sandwich. This is not fast food, it is grandma food. I learned that at the "Big Hats & Little Whispers" sandwich shop when you order a chopped brisket sandwich they don't just scoop up a blob of chopped beef out of a plastic tub, Grandma takes out the sliced brisket and hand chops it for you. I'll bet if you ask she would even cut the crust off your bread.. Did I mention
that all the bread is homemade? |
This is the front door but just like at my Grandma's the sign on the door directs you to the side door. (Grandma doesn't use that door anymore, too far from the kitchen.) |

This is the menu the day I was there. I'm sure it varies. They also have a chalkboard with the soup of the day and daily specials. |

Other Notes: The "Big Hats & Little Whispers" sandwich shop is right next to the "Blast from the Past" gift shop. Ladies, among other things, this is a great place to buy your "Red Hat". Guys if you don't know what that means it's OK. Just go with the flow. |
