Happy Birthday - Texas Bob

I was born during the Truman administration 55 years ago today. In the picture, taken in 1955 I’m sitting on horse in front of my brother David at the age of three. The picture was taken by an intenerate photographer who made his living going through the neighborhood taking pictures of kids on his pony. This would never happen on Ozzie and Harriet but it was common in Odessa, Texas. About two years later we got a TV from Sears and Roebuck. The local station came on the air about 2:30 in the afternoon and went off the air promptly at 10:30 PM.

The US flag only had 48 stars and Texas was the biggest state of them all. Most men work in the Oil patch seven days a week and moms stayed home with the kids.

Along time ago.

Hi, this has nothing to do with your blog really. I came across you on the net while looking for my family info. My Grandfather is a direct decendant of John Brooks Esq., and that is how I found you. I found all this once about 5 years ago and had it all saved on my computer and then about a year ago my hard drive crashed and I lost everything and am having a devil of a time trying to find it all again. I can't figure out which son of Micajah Brooks, son of John Brooks Jr., leads to my grand father, Herman Floyd Brooks. But it was a straight line from son to son until it hit my mom who is an only child.

Got any advice?

Thanks, Laurie Higgins, Atlanta, GA

Dear Texas Bob,

Thanks for keeping the Texas spirit alive and well. From a transplanted Texas (who now considers Texas home for the rest of my given life), your work and travels help to promote this great state of ours.

Sincerely,
Edie Romero

Hey Texas Bob!

I believe that my sister had her picture taken on that horse! I'll have to see if my mom can dig one up so we can compare. I think hers was in 1953 though, because I also had my picture taken by the same photographer, but I was in my baby seat.

Go Katy,

Cathy aka Tigerjag
